General scope
The goal of the Encyclopedia of Toxicology, 3rd edition is to provide an extensive overview of the many facets of toxicology. This new edition will be 4 volumes in length and contain approximately 3,500 pages or 1200 total entries.
The 3rd edition of Encyclopedia of Toxicology will present entries, in an A to Z arrangement, devoted to key concepts and specific chemicals, and will reflect the latest advances in the field of toxicology since the 2nd edition. The Editor‐in‐Chief and Publisher envision new and revised entries covering important topics such as nanotoxicology, epigenetics, the exposome, persistent organic pollutants, recent developments in animal alternatives and testing, the Tox21 collaborative initiative, computational toxicology and bioinformatics, new risk assessment paradigms, exposure science trends, controversial chemicals and much more. Along with the traditional scientifically‐based entries, new entries focusing on worldwide policy initiatives, the potential public health and environmental effects of new technologies, and the societal implications of global legal and regulatory issues will also be included.
The 3rd edition will be offered both in print and as an electronic edition on ScienceDirect. This new edition will also be a critical part of Elsevier's new workflow solution, Hazmat Navigator (http://www.hazmatnavigator.com/search/quick). A 3rd edition of the Encyclopedia of Toxicology is essential to augmenting it with the most current and relevant toxicology material.
With thoroughly updated entries, references and resources for recommended reading, the 3rd edition will be expanded in length, breadth and depth to provide essential toxicology content to a wide audience including students and professors in toxicology and pharmacology, practicing toxicologists and pharmacologists working in drug companies, chemists, testing labs and poison control centers, physicians, pharmacists and other health care professionals, legal and regulatory professionals and journalists.
Concise Encyclopedia of Toxicology, Environmental Health and Risk Assessment
The Concise Encyclopedia of Toxicology, drawn partially from the 3rd edition, will be a single volume resource focusing on key areas in toxicology. Unlike the 3rd edition, the Concise Encyclopedia will not contain individual chemical entries, although it will retain key concepts of toxicology and a select number of entries dealing with classes of chemicals. Entries from the 3rd edition of Encyclopedia of Toxicology will be carefully examined for relevance and rewritten or condensed as needed to fit the briefer format of the Concise Encyclopedia.
The Concise Encyclopedia will be targeted to individuals rather than to libraries or corporations. The target audience includes:
• Research and Clinical Toxicologists (especially those who want a more generalized look at areas outside of their specialty) • Students and Instructors of Toxicology and Ancillary Fields (such as Risk Assessment, Occupational Safety and Health and Environmental Health) • The Regulatory Community • Remediation Engineers • Physicians, Health Professionals and Emergency Response Personnel
