Aims and Scope for this project
This all-electronic, trans-disciplinary, authoritative, peer-reviewed reference work will still surprise students and researchers with new ways to understand subjects in the social and behavioral sciences. Even though information sources continue to multiply, a large, broad encyclopedia possesses an inherent capacity to enrich the research process. Both its format and its integrated articles encourage discovery and the building of contexts and connections. The second edition of the International Encyclopedia of Social and Behavioral Sciences, first published in 2001, will take full advantage of advances in electronic publishing. The 2nd edition will include articles on rapidly evolving subjects (pysch, neuro, evolution, artificial intelligence, human/computer interaction).
As in the 1st edition, articles in the 2nd will be written by top international researchers, professors, and scholars. The articles will reveal the dynamics of current thinking about a given topic and discuss how it relates to other subjects. Standard parts of each article will include:
definitions
intellectual backgrounds, including schools of thought and leading advocates
current knowledge
changes in focus or emphasis over time
current and emerging directions in theory and research
methodological issues or problems
links to databases and software
The International Encyclopedia of Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2nd Edition, will have a revised taxonomy to better describe current research trends. Readers will use it to discover connections among fields and to supplement subject-specific encyclopedias. Through its detailed indexes, it will drive usage in university and research libraries enhancing sales benefits. Updates include:
Improved electronic publishing technologies – the 1st edition is a collection of PDFs with limited search functions. The 2nd edition will include new pedagogical features (abstracts, suggested readings, cross-references)
Maturing disciplines – the 1st edition content is perceived as dated. The 2nd edition will include articles on rapidly evolving subjects (psych, neuro, evolution, artificial intelligence, human/computer interaction)
